Sip + Brunch Recap

In June, we hosted our first round of Sip + Brunch at Weather Up in East Austin.  It was a hot one, but the drinks most definitely kept us cool on the spacious patio.

The kind bartender and our host, Fidel, was not only talented but incredibly knowledgable. He walked us through three cocktail recipes - the daiquiri, the Manhattan and the margarita.

We all practiced our skills with professional and stylish bar tools. Fidel covered the proper way to shake, stir and pour and everything in between.

Chef  Kristine Kittrell completed the afternoon with her culinary magic. Bacon bites, cheese plates, chicken and waffles... you name it.  It was quite the treat getting to sample their delectable brunch menu.

As an added bonus, we provided each guest with a swag bag chockfull of local and creative goodies, like custom cocktail recipe cards from Emma Gundlach, Austin Beerworks Pearl Snap, gold paper straws and metal drink stirrers!

Lemon Elderflower Sparkler

Memorial Day is just around the corner! Since we are taking it easy this year, we decided to share a refreshing recipe that reflects just that.  Enjoy!

Ingredients

1 bottle cava, well-chilled
2 cups Belvoir Fruit Farms Elderflower Lemonade
2 lemons, juiced (about 1/4 cup)
Raspberries, to garnish

(Makes 6 drinks)

Preparation

Pour the Elderflower Lemonade and the lemon juice together into their own container. The Lemonade is organic, but I thought it would be a nice touch to add fresh squeezed juice to bring out the flavor. Pour about 3 tablespoons of this mixture into a Champagne flute. Pour in enough cava to fill the glass 3/4 full...or to your liking. Swirl gently. Drop a few raspberries in that thing, say cheers, and sip!

Watermelon Mint Julep

What does a Mint Julep make you think of? The Kentucky Derby, right? But why should such a delicious cocktail be relegated to one day for an event that lasts only two minutes? They're way too tasty for that, and with the addition of juicy watermelon, you've got a inspiriting cocktail to serve all summer long.

Ingredients

1 1/2 oz. Rio Brazos Texas Whiskey (I like to use local or Texas brands when possible!)
½ oz. Russell & Mahoney simple syrup
5 sprigs fresh mint
6 cubes fresh watermelon

Preparation

Muddle simple syrup and watermelon in a mixing glass. Add mint and press lightly to release oils. Add bourbon and mix well with cracked ice. Strain over crushed ice. Garnish with watermelon and fresh mint.
